A Letter from God

My Dearest Children….

I couldn’t help but enjoy the sound of your delight while I watched the pride and joy of your communities play volleyball and football. (They’re my pride and joy, too, you know.)

I love a good game – any game! (I’m not particular & I don’t have any favorites – I invented them all, you know…) The ‘play’ of the athletes has been simply outstanding (and the sportsmanship hasn’t been too shabby, either – both on and off the court or field…of course there’s always room for improvement). The coaches know who’s really playing well (as do the athletes themselves and their teammates) so there’s no need for me to ‘name names’ but I will tell you this much: I am very pleased when I see people using the gifts and abilities I’ve given them – no matter what age bracket they fall into or level of competition. Nor does it matter to me who wins – I just like to watch a good game, ya know?

But while I was watching recently, I found myself pondering a question: What would it be like for my children to watch a sporting event but not be able to yell encouragement or applaud a good play? Would that be frustrating or what?!?

Imagine not being able to shout, “Yes!!” when a volley ball is spiked for a kill (I also wonder if a different word could be used instead of ‘kill’ but that’s probably best left for another letter). Or how frustrating would it be to not be able to shout, “Hold that line!” when it’s 4th down, the football is one-foot away from the goal-line with just seconds left in the game and if the Lions defense holds – well, then the boys win the game. I’ll answer my own question: It would be very frustrating! I know how humans are made - after all, I created you! I know it would be hard to not want to cheer when every muscle in a fan’s body is absolutely straining to let out some noise.

Let me ponder in a slightly different direction: What would it be like for fans if players in every size, shape and school-color showed up for a game on GameDay - but no player really wanted to play and instead, just sat on the volleyball court-side bench or played Frisbee on the field instead of football? No matter how much cheering took place – no matter how creative the cheers – nothing could make the players play like they had been coached to do?

Sometimes I’m a little jealous – OK, a lot jealous – when there’s so much energy and excitement and effort put towards following a sporting event and cheering on a team yet when it comes to showing a little life and enthusiasm towards working with me in my Kingdom, there just doesn’t seem to be the same kind of energy or passion.

Is it just me – or have you noticed the same thing?

With all my love,
God
